Sheffield United (h); The Review

27/01/19

Farkeball at its finest, an intense encounter, redecorating the away dressing room and a look forward to Leeds. It's all here in Ffion Thomas' excellent words...

Biggest positive

An intense, exciting and enjoyable afternoon at Carrow Road, with two very good teams more than a match for each other. Norwich demonstrated the more attractive football, the movement of both ball and personnel unplayable at times, but Sheffield United the more effective, overpowering us down the flanks to deliver dangerous crosses and invite tackles. The joy of this league is in its competitiveness – we’ll miss it when we’re gone.

Weekend whinge

Shipping two very simple and avoidable goals to undo all the far more complex work it had taken to unlock the United defence. We should be better than naive tackles in the box with seconds to go before the break, and lapses of concentration that give one of the league’s top strikers a free header from six yards out.

Moment of the match

Knocking it around patiently in defence and midfield for a full minute, from back to front and back to front again via a Blades upfield punt, then a rapid move through the gears with some beautiful one-touch passing – Stiepermann to Hernandez to Stiepermann to Vrancic to Pukki – who notched up another assist with the killer ball for Mr Argos to deliver the rest. Surely one of the best team goals seen at Carrow Road in a very long time.

Random star performer(s)

The Sheffield United kitmen, who managed to channel their inner Laurence Llewelyn-Bowen and rekindle the magic of hit BBC series Changing Rooms in…the changing rooms. The decision to use sheets of A1 paper and sellotape rendered the finish of their wallpapering shoddy, while the addition of inspirational posters of Billy Sharp and friends made it oddly reminiscent of a child’s bedroom. Marks for effort, but next time we’ll get the professionals in.

Farke watch

Our ability to hold on to the lead might have benefited from some earlier substitutions, with Buendia – perhaps understandably after a week recovering from a dead leg – out on his feet from midway through the second half. Equally, such a move might have thrown things completely and left us with nothing – so it is what it is.

Atmosphere rating

A big game and a big atmosphere right from the start, with the Blades fans playing a part too. Their ‘Take Your Time’ chant, which references our shithousing but mostly forgotten 1-0 away win *checks sundial* 16 months ago, would be quite amusing if reserved only for fixtures between our two teams, but the fact they sing the same words when leading against any opposition renders it instead in the category of ‘extremely rattled’ behaviour.

Summary

Another week, another step closer to the end of what has been the toughest run of games we’ll face all season, and our nearest opponents get no closer to us – although of course it’s disappointing not to win having been in the lead twice.

We look forward now to what will no doubt be an extremely tedious week of anti-Norwich Yorkshire entente cordiales on social media, but the final standings will be settled not on days like today or next Saturday, but on the level of consistency we can maintain in the 15 of our 17 remaining fixtures – 45 possible points – which are against teams outside the current top six.
